I just had to let go of an idea that I was not into letting go of. Not having a good time about it, but guess what? Sometimes we must do things that are not our first choice. I'm going to talk to you about willingness to let go of ideas and how that can really enhance one's happiness and creative flow. My name is ellee ven and I am a self-proclaimed groovalutionary.
I have been accused of changing my mind a lot, and I'm going to tell you not guilty. Me and everybody else on the planet must be allowed the opportunity to let go of ideas. Not all ideas are great. Let's take it on a small scale. I would love to have some duck confit for lunch. Well, guess what, that takes like 500 years to make and so that's not going to happen. I'm going to have to be happy with my salad. That is kind of a weak example, but it's really a perfect example in the way that there are so many things we can hold on to. "Oh, I wanted to have that kind of granola, but they don't have that kind of granola. Oh, I can't have that kind of granola." "You know what? You can have a different kind of granola today. Have a handful, let it go and be excited about the granola of your choice tomorrow."
Now let's take this beyond the stomach and talk about how it might affect a creative flow. I'll go into the studio and I'll have a very clear idea of what I want my melodies to do. I'll be like, "Hey, yay, yay, yay." But then the producer says, "Do. (singing)" And you know what it is the right line for the song. And so I have to be willing to try it. I might feel like a fool, but it doesn't matter because once I just try it and I let go of how I'm going to feel about it, if it's perfect, then I really actually opened myself to all this other creativity, all this other development. And so it was the letting go of my idea and willingness to listen to another, that actually helped me grow.
Another example would be how one collects ideas. I love to collect ideas because guess what? You can discard the ones that are less meaningful. I have an ongoing list on my notes and I just write down little taglines of things that are to bring me back to where I want to go. And oftentimes a list of 20 will really end up resulting in a list of five. That could be five lyrics. It could be five blogs. It could be five short story ideas. But the idea is, is that ideas, ideas, ideas, ideas, brainstorm. Brainstorming is all about getting it out. It serves as a therapeutic way of getting out all the ideas and it leads you to happy accidents. It leads you to other considerations, especially when you're brainstorming with others.
The moral of the story is to let go of the ideas that do not serve. Brainstorming allows you the opportunity to sift through the less fabulous ideas to create space for the biggies, to create space, time, energy, around the ideas that really become the most meaningful. Anyhow, in conclusion, the best way to stay creative is to be creative. My name is thich nhat ven.
